Prof. Dr med. Philippe Morel is a referring physician at Nouvelle Clinique Vert-Pré. An FMH specialist in surgery and visceral surgery, he is recognised for his expertise in minimally invasive and robotic surgery, as well as in obesity surgery.
Former head of the visceral surgery department at Geneva University Hospitals from 1995 and former director of the department of surgery, he was appointed full professor at the Geneva Faculty of Medicine. Since 2018, he has practised independently.
Areas of expertise
His practice covers visceral and digestive surgery, obesity and overweight surgery, as well as minimally invasive and robotic techniques. In 2006, he launched the visceral robotic surgery (Da Vinci) programme at HUG, where he performed around 1,500 robotic procedures, including bariatric, gastric, liver, pancreatic, intestinal and parietal surgery.
He is also involved in the development of new surgical technologies and in organ transplantation, fields in which he has held national and international responsibilities.
Background and qualifications
Prof. Morel obtained the FMH specialist title in surgery in Bern in 1990, followed by advanced training in visceral surgery FMH in 2006. Privat-docent in 1992 and lecturer in 1994, he was appointed full professor at the Geneva Faculty of Medicine in 1995. He also holds the American medical examination ECFMG (1978).
From 1995 to 2018, he headed the visceral surgery department at HUG. He was also director of the department of surgery (1997-2006), head of the laboratory for new surgical techniques (2001-2018), surgical director of the Swiss-French University Transplantation Centre (2004-2018) and head of the admissions and emergency centre at HUG (2008-2012).
Affiliations
Former president of the Swiss Society of Surgery (2010-2012), he chairs the Foundation for New Surgical Technologies, the Insuléman Foundation, the Fairtransplant Foundation and The Geneva Institute. He was vice-president of Swisstransplant until 2018 and Switzerland's delegate to the Council of Europe on organ transplantation.
Author or co-author of more than 450 scientific publications, he has received several distinctions, including the Grassi Prize of the Collegium Internationale Chirurgiae Digestivae.
